Christina Thomas

Assistant Coach - HB

christinathomas.gtcu@outlook.com

Christina first fell in love with the sport of swimming, competing with summer and club teams while growing up in south Georgia. She finished high school ranked top 20 at the GHSA state meet in the 100 breaststroke and is the most decorated female swimmer at Wayne County High School with multiple school records for the Lady Yellow Jackets. In undergrad, she was part of two CCS National Champion teams with Georgia Tech Swim Club.

Christina graduated with a neuroscience degree and then moved to Nebraska for physical therapy school at Creighton University. During PT school, she coached with Greater Omaha Aquatics, where she helped coach four state championship teams. In the summer of 2024, she moved to South Florida to complete her neurologic physical therapy residency with Memorial Healthcare and Nova Southeastern University. She’s excited to use her knowledge of motor learning, biomechanics, and neuroscience on the pool deck.

Christina loves sharing the joy of swimming and watching young athletes learn the values of hard work, sportsmanship, discipline, and commitment to the process. In her free time, you can find Christina training for triathlons, cheering on her younger brothers, scoping out local ice cream shops, and hanging out with friends at the beach.

There was a recent movie with Jennifer Lopez entitled “Second Act”.  I would like to borrow that title.  My first act was as an attorney.  After 35 years of practicing law I retired.  My wife, whom I love dearly, told me after I retired: “I love you, you’re perfect, get out.”  Well maybe those were not her exact words, especially the part about being perfect.  But she did encourage me in my retirement to return to my passion so here I am coaching as my second act.

My swimming and Y connection dates back to my pre-school days.  I learned to swim at a YMCA family camp on Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire. I grew up in New York where I joined my local YMCA swim team and participated in the Y age group nationals. I parlayed my swimming abilities into an ocean lifeguarding position which I did for 20 years. At college I played water polo for my school. My prior coaching experience is limited to being an assistant coach at the Y where I swam. I did that when I came back home from college on holidays.

I gained so much from my swimming experience. It taught me mental discipline and toughness. Skills that are transferrable for all of us in our careers or personal lives.  Some of my closest friends today were my team mates from my boyhood. I want to share this with our Y kids and let them develop to their maximum potential both in and out of the pool.

Outside of swimming, I am a parent. I have two sons. One graduated college and works for a consulting firm in Atlanta. The other is graduating from Duke this May.  I enjoy cooking and my chef’s garden. I also volunteer at a local food bank.
